Davis, Jr., Sammy
Alongside Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. was one of the most popular entertainers in America in the 1950s and 1960s. Born in Harlem in 1925, his father was also a performer, who took him on tour and helped teach the young Davis how to dance and entertain. He began a solo career in 1951, attaining significant popular success and acclaim for the rest of the decade.
Joining up with the Rat Pack in 1959 at the behest of his friend Sinatra, Davis became a regular sight in Las Vegas in the 1960s, and although his musical career began to wane during this time, he remained a regular sight on television and in film throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He passed away from throat cancer in 1990.
