Brown, Clifford
Clifford Brown was one of the all-time definitive jazz trumpet stylists. Born in Delaware in 1930, Brown began playing trumpet in his teens and was performing professionally by his early 20s. Having been discovered at Philadelphia jam sessions, he joined the trumpet section of Lionel Hampton's band before setting off on a freelance career as a leader and sideman. The quintet he co-led with drummer Max Roach was responsible for turning him into a star, as the group released several classic albums to critical acclaim. Sadly, Brown's life was cut short in an automobile accident in 1956. His legacy continued to live on through the countless trumpeters he influenced, including Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd, and Freddie Hubbard.
