Bauza, Mario
Multi-instrumentalist/arranger Mario Bauza studied classical clarinet in his native Havana before moving to the United States in 1925. He worked as a freelance trumpeter with the bands of Chick Webb and Cab Calloway, during which time he became affiliated with Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald. His connection with Gillespie was particularly important, as he would introduce Gillespie to the Afro-Cuban music that would become such a key part of his musicianship.
In 1941, Bauza teamed up with his brother-in-law, bandleader Machito, to form the first version of Machito and his Afro-Cubans. The band would have a lengthy string of success for the next 30+ years, with Bauza playing trumpet and saxophone for the band as well as serving as its musical director. After leaving Machito in 1976, Bauza led several of his own projects until his death in 1993.
