Kirk, Andy
Andy Kirk was one of the most successful territory band leaders. His group, the Twelve Clouds of Joy, served as a launching pad for some of the biggest names in jazz, including trumpeters Fats Navarro, Howard McGhee and Shorty Baker, saxophonists Ben Webster, Don Byas and Buddy Tate, pianist Hank Jones and drummer Ed Thigpen. Perhaps most notably, Mary Lou Williams got her start as a fill in pianist with Kirk, eventually taking over the chair for herself as well as writing some of Kirk's most popular and forward-looking charts.
