Williams, James
Hailing from Memphis, Tennessee, pianist James Williams began teaching at the Berklee School of Music at age 22. While at Berklee, Williams would be a member of drummer Alan Dawson's band, accompanying several of the great jazz soloists that came through town. In 1977, he joined up with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, with whom he would tour for the next four years.
After a return to Boston after leaving the Messengers, Williams move to New York, where he became one of the most frequently called pianists on the scene. He remained involved in education, becoming the head of the jazz studies program at William Paterson University. He remained an active pianist, composer and educator until his unexpected passing in 2004.
