Paulson, John C.
John C. Paulson started his musical journey in Rochester, MN playing in area rock bands and participating in school music groups. He migrated west and got his B.M. and M.M. from the University of Utah where he studied jazz arranging with Henry Wolking and later completed his DMA in music education from the University of Washington. He started playing the saxophone at age 10, studied flute and clarinet with members of the Utah Symphony and the L.A. Chamber Orchestra and studied jazz improvisation with Garry Dial in New York. After 35 years of full time teaching, Dr. Paulson now has professor emeritus status at Saint Mary's University in Winona, MN. Following his retirement from Saint Mary's University he taught jazz studies part time at Winona State University for five years. He has performed internationally with student jazz groups plus freelance work with The Cab Calloway Orchestra, Mel Torme, Andy Williams, Bob Hope, The Temptations, Johnny Mathis, Pioneer Memorial Theatre and The Repertory Dance Theatre in Salt Lake City. He has produced seven commercial jazz CDs and done 5 Master class CDs for the Saxophone Journal. He has produced two big band CDs of his original music: The John Paulson Big Band Project was released in 2012 and Five Years On by the JPBB was released in the fall of 2018. Five Years On was selected as one of the top 10 big band CDs of 2018 by KBEM-FM jazz radio in Minneapolis. Scores and parts are available from ejazzLines.com.
Paulson has received numerous grants in support of his concerts, clinics and recordings from the McKnight Foundation and the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council. Highlights of JPBB performances include being accepted to play at the Jazz Educators Network convention in Louisville, KY and numerous grant funded concerts and residencies with members of his big band. Dr. Paulson officially endorses Jody Jazz sax mouthpieces & accessories and is a member of ASCAP, JEN (the Jazz Educators Network), River Arts Alliance, and ISJAC (the International Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composer).
