Martin, Lowell
Lowell Martin was born Roy Strong Martin, April 17, 1917, in Chicago. He spent much of his childhood in Florida, and played trombone as a teenager to earn money. This eventually led him to become a professional trombone player and music arranger for several of the big bands of the 1940s including those of Tommy Dorsey and Woody Herman and to move to Hollywood, California. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II, playing trombone in the first radio production unit of the WFTC and making training films. Post-war he worked - largely uncredited - on arrangements for Axel Stordahl including hits for Frank Sinatra such as Five Minutes More and in the 1950s - again uncredited - at Capitol Records. He also arranged for television including shows such as The Odd Couple but was similarly uncredited. He died aged 98, in Hurricane, Utah, May 3, 2015.
