Gray, Jerry
Born Generoso Graziano, Jerry Gray was one of the definitive arrangers of the Swing Era. Beginning studies on violin at age 7, Gray was already leading his first band in the Boston area by the time he was 18.
Initially joining Artie Shaw's orchestra as first violinist, Gray eventually became one of Shaw's staff arrangers, crafting several arrangements that became classics (most notably "Begin The Beguine.") After Shaw disbanded his organization in 1939, Gray was almost instantly hired by Glenn Miller. Their relationship would last throughout World War II, with Gray writing such iconic Miller hits as "A String Of Pearls," "Pennsylvania 6-5000," and "Chattanooga Choo-Choo."
Although Gray was passed over as leader of the Glenn Miller Orchestra upon its leader's untimely passing, he stayed on as arranger for most of the remainder of the 1940s. Eventually, he became involved with writing music for radio before forming his own band in 1949. He even did some work in Hollywood, collaborating with friend (and fellow Miller alum) on the soundtrack for "The Glenn Miller Story."
Moving to Dallas by the 1960s, Gray served as bandleader at the Fairmont Hotel until his passing in 1976.
