Fuller, Gil
Walter "Gil" Fuller was born in 1920. By the time he was in his late teens, he had already developed a reputation as a talented arranger, writing charts for such notables as Jimmie Lunceford, Tommy Dorsey and Billy Eckstine.
After serving in World War II, Fuller became half of the primary two-man arranging team for the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra of the late 1940s. Alongside Tadd Dameron, Fuller was responsible for crafting some of the most iconic big band arrangements of the 1940s, including the hits "Manteca," "Tin Tin Deo," and "One Bass Hit."
Fuller's career would expand over the years in various directions, ranging from writing for Ray Charles to Stan Kenton to even some film scoring. He is also notable for having formed a music publishing company in 1957 that published stock versions of his works for the Gillespie organization, as well writing texts to serve as an educational insight into his approach to arranging. He passed away in 1994.
