Roland, Gene
Gene Roland attended the University of North Texas College of Music, and began writing for Stan Kenton in 1944; he was the only Kenton arranger who contributed to the Kenton book throughout the entirety of the leader's long career. Roland was influential in the adoption of a mellophonium section in the Kenton orchestra of the early 1960s. Roland has been credited with creating the '4 Brothers' sound of 3 tenor and baritone saxophones, and this configuration was utilized by Woody Herman from the late 1940s onward.
In addition to Kenton, Roland played for Georgie Auld, Count Basie, and Charlie Barnet. He wrote for Dan Terry, Claude Thornhill and Artie Shaw. Roland lived most of his later life in New York, writing for and leading several different-sized ensembles until his death in 1982.
