Hubbard, Freddie
One of the all-time great jazz trumpeters, Freddie Hubbard served his musical apprenticeship working with such notables as Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Quincy Jones, and Slide Hampton. His albums as a leader for Blue Note and Atlantic through the 1960s put him on the map; however, he achieved his greatest popular success for his albums for the CTI label in the early 1970s. All of these albums continue to be revered by jazz fans to this day.
Beginning in the 1980s, Hubbard returned to performing acoustic jazz, touring with his own groups as well as continuing to perform with longtime collaborators Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson and Bobby Hutcherson. A serious lip injury in 1992 significantly limited his once formidable technique, but Hubbard continued to perform until his passing in 2008.
