Rasmussen, Dave
Sea Breeze Jazz recording artist Dave Rasmussen is the founder and leader of the Jazz Factory, an organization comprised of several jazz ensembles from small combo to big band. Dave's musical activities include studies at the Lamont College of Music at Denver University and at Berklee College of Music. Dave organized a jazz program at the Sheraton Tara Hotel from 1991 to 1994 that featured jazz musicians from throughout the New England area. His bands have appeared at many Boston area venues including Lai Lai's, Ryles Jazz Club, The Tap, the Acton Jazz Cafe, Chit Chat Lounge and Chianti's Tuscan Jazz Lounge. From 1999 to 2005, Dave performed with the Altamonte Jazz Ensemble in the Orlando, FL area. During this time, he appeared in concerts that featured nationally known jazz musicians including Bobby Shew, The Four Freshman, John Von Ohlen, Bob McChesney, Rich Walker and Jamie Davis. He also performed with the Les Brown Orchestra at Busch Gardens.
However, Dave's primary focus has been in jazz composition and arranging. He wrote his first arrangement in high school for a senior class assembly (with Carl Saunders in the trumpet section). At Denver University, he wrote arrangements on Malaguena, Tangerine and an original composition, which he then submitted to DownBeat magazine for a talent competition. He was awarded a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied alto saxophone with John LaPorta and arranging with Everett Longstreth. He has led the Jazz Factory ensembles since 1983.
More recently, Dave has focused his arranging on jazz versions of semi-classical compositions including 'Sunrise' and 'On The Trail' from Ferde Grofe's 'Grand Canyon Suite.' These now complement an earlier big band arrangement of Ernesto Lecuona's 'Malaguena.' His arrangements are available at ejazzlines.com.
