Clayton, Buck
One of the greatest swing era trumpeters, Buck Clayton was known for his impeccable melodicism and beautiful sound. Clayton achieved his primary recognition through his work with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra in the 1930s, where he shared a section with fellow great Harry "Sweets" Edison.
After serving in the military in World War II, Clayton freelanced with several top bands and became a regular sight at Jazz At The Philharmonic shows. He also led a series of jam session albums in the 1950s that received great acclaim. A lip injury forced him to largely retire from playing by the 1970s, but he maintained a fairly busy schedule as an arranger and educator until his death in 1991.
