Ballad was written for and recorded by FOUR and the Utah Saxophone Quartet. Melody is initially in the baritone with additional passages in the tenor and soprano, shared between the two groups. Use of counterpoint helps the composition move forward with a climactic section of harmonized melody in the Utah quartet over a rhythmic pad from FOUR. There is no improvisation. Harmonies are colorful but done in a way that lends themselves to acceptance from the common listener.
