Edition: Jazz Saxophone Quintet Arrangement with Rhythm Section
Description: Swing - Difficult
Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications
As is to be expected from Benny Carter, his take on the Fats Waller/Andy Razaf standard Ain't Misbehavin' is melodically intriguing, rhythmically invigorating, and technically challenging, providing a thoroughly entertaining experience for performers and listeners alike. This was arranged for Benny's 1988 album Over the Rainbow.
Beginning with a four bar piano solo, the first two A sections are handled by the harmonized saxes before allowing the baritone sax (played by Joe Temperley on the original recording) to shine for the second half of the tune. The rest of the saxes provide subtle accompaniment on the bridge before yielding the spotlight to the bari sax entirely for the final A section. After opening things up for solos, Carter writes a delightfully complex sax soli which implies a double-time approach atop the steadily swinging rhythm section. This soli is broken up by an eight bar piano solo for the bridge, with the ending coming in the form of a simple copy-and-pasted tag.
This publication was prepared from the original set of parts used for the 1988 recording session - this is not a transcription.
